Faux Fireplace-Metamorphosis Monday

I have had this piece of furniture in storage for 5 years. It was my MIL's neighbor's who were moving at the time and they were going to throw it out! I can't stand to see things just tossed to the curb and when I looked at it, I envisioned a Fireplace mantle. Having nowhere to put it when we "acquired' it, it went into our storage shed just waiting ........
Both my sons moved out this year leaving me with two rooms to play with. In the new "guest room" is where I decided to place my "faux" fireplace. As you can see, I had to refinish it standing right there in the room.
I used a gel stain to fill in the scratches which you can see are all over. I then took off the middle door, removed the shelves and painted the "firebox" black. I placed 2 marble tiles in the "fire box", bought new handles for the doors on the sides and gold leafed the appliques. I then bought a 3 foot unfinished shelf, added 3 peel and stick floor tiles to it to create the "hearth" and placed it on the floor in front of the piece.
And now.......I have my " fireplace" and with storage to boot in the sides. I placed all of my old magazines that I collect on the shelves in the side doors.
Below is a photo of my "fireplace" decorated for Christmas.....

Here are more photos.......
As to what the piece was before, I haven't the faintest idea. The middle part opens almost like a desk but since it is too tall to sit at, I am thinking it was a martini bar???????? Anybody have any guesses??????
So now I finally have a "fireplace" in my home......
